Small Bathroom W.I.P Part 1

It's been a pretty long time since I've blogged!  And to be quite honest, 3D has taken kind of a backseat (I wonder what gave that away?). Anyways, I'm getting back into it!

Test renders! This is what I've got so far.  And I have to say, I'm having a love hate relationship with the GI prototype.  While it's great in settings with a lot of direct light and creates more natural looking lighting with less fuss, it starts requiring a significant boost to sampling to smooth out scenes with heavy indirect lighting.

Still some grain :(

I was a little suspicious of the mila shaders, especially with the new look dev Hypershade window constantly crashing Maya but after becoming more familiar with them (and no longer using the look dev feature), I'm annoyed that I didn't jump on these sooner.
Unlimited layers and never having to fiddle with weight settings to avoid overly bright surfaces (seriously, that alone makes it worth it).

Really tempted to drop in a few more objects

Floor plan

One of the bigger issues I'm having with the GI prototype is what happens to glass. Check out the shower stall.  Objects behind it get a bit dark and I'm still trying to figure out if it's something I'm missing, I had to omit glass from the window pane for these tests.  It just looks odd. Just to make sure, there is no refraction falloff color and there are enough rays to pass through the object.  I've even tried messing with the ray switch node.  Still poking around the new features.

  2. Thank you! I've been pondering on whether or not I should make an updated version to the Interior Lighting with Mental Ray post (see link below) using the new tools in Maya 2016. There are some issues I've been having with performance and I'm still in the process of figuring out if I'm going crazy or if some of the new stuff is broken.
